Why I Secretly Dread Refactoring

Even though I know refactoring is supposed to be a good thing, I usually hate doing it. Whenever I have to clean up an old codebase, I get anxious because there is a huge risk of breaking things. My brain immediately goes to that classic saying: "If it ain't broke, don't touch it."

The worst part is the constant fear of introducing new bugs into a system that is working perfectly fine right now. Most old projects I work on don't have automated tests, so I have no real safety net. I can't easily check if my small change just accidentally broke something else far away in the app. To make things worse, old code is usually full of messy, unwritten fixes that people added for weird, specific problems. I hate touching that code because cleaning it up usually means I am going to accidentally bring those old bugs back to life.
